Ninth-ranked women’s bantamweight Bethe Correia was hoping to pick up a win over No. 13 ranked Manrion Reneau in her home country of Brazil on Saturday while Reneau was looking to rise up the women’s 135-pound rankings with a win over the former title challenger. Neither accomplished what they set out to.
Reneau employed a kicking game against the heavy-handed Brazilian in the early going. Correia landed counter right hands off the kicks, but the body shots were starting to add up by the end of the frame. In the closing moments of the round, Correia took Reneau down. She was unable to inflict much damage, but ended the frame in top position.
