Featherweight champion Conor McGregor entered the Octagon inside New York City’s Madison Square Garden on Saturday trying to make history by becoming the fight fighter in UFC history to hold two belts at the same time when he faced lightweight titleholder Eddie Alvarez.
McGregor strutted his way into the cage to the sound of cheering fans. When he exited it, he had two world title belts.
McGregor landed his left hand at will, dropping Alvarez three times in the opening round. After the third knockdown, McGregor following Alvarez to the canvas and delivered heavy shots from the top position. Alvarez was somehow able to survive the round, but as McGregor said during the pre-fight press conference, it was the McGregor show.
Alvarez desperately looked to get the fight to the ground in the second frame but was unsuccessful. At one point, McGregor put his hands behind his back and taunted the American. He knocked Alvarez down for a fourth time, but Alvarez got back to his feet. The end was soon to follow. McGregor delivered a combination that sent Alvarez crashing to the canvas. Referee John McCarthey had seen enough and stepped in before Alvarez could take any more damage.
